Andrea Hughes is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, sculpture and installation. Her practice is characterised by an exuberant use of colour, richly layered surfaces and decorative embellishment, and lashings of built-up paint. These materials create works that are unapologetically vibrant, playful and visually abundant.
Drawing on retro and vintage nostalgia, Hughes moves fluidly between abstraction and figuration. Stylised figures, decorative motifs and bold shapes appear throughout her work, referencing the aesthetics of glamour, kitsch and popular culture. Through this visual language, she embraces ornament, excess and humour as a way of elevating aesthetics that have often been overlooked or dismissed.
In true feminist tradition, Andrea celebrates the beauty of the ordinary and the domestic. Her work reclaims colour, decoration and pleasure as powerful artistic tools, challenging long-held hierarchies within art history that have placed greater value on restraint and seriousness.
Hughes has exhibited widely both in Australia and internationally, presenting work in galleries and curated exhibitions. Her work is held in national and international collections. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours and continues to develop a practice that celebrates colour, memory and the joyful possibilities of the decorative.
