With a natural curiosity for the creative process Andrea’s practice is multifaceted and includes painting, sculpture and installation. References to place and home often appear in Andrea’s work through the use of shapes, form, light and shadow. The viewer is invited to enter a world of reminiscences, remembering, happenings and places. She is known for her joyful use of colour, painting on both canvas and Perspex. Paintings on canvas are layered, created by the building up surfaces often to a point where the two-dimensional becomes three-dimensional. The Perspex works in contrast, are translucent; the inks and paint cast shadows of themselves in various colour combinations, alluding to memory and the passage of time. Figures are also conveyed expressing fragments of personal history or collective memory. In true feminist tradition, Hughes celebrates the beauty of the ordinary and the domestic using reoccurring colours, shapes, pattern and familiar figures.
Andrea has exhibited widely, both internationally and at home in Australia. Her work is held in international and national collections. She holds a BA in Fine Arts with Honours and works as a Gallery Manager for Yarra Sculpture Gallery and an Art Mentor for Arts Access Victoria.
